October is National Book Month!
Did you know that more than 1 in 3 American children start kindergarten without the language skills they need to learn to read (American Academy of Pediatrics)? According to the organization Zero to Three, "Early language and literacy (reading and writing) development begins in the first three years of life and is closely linked to the child’s earliest experiences with books and stories. The interactions that young children have with such literacy materials as books, paper, and crayons, and with the adults in their lives are the building blocks for language, reading, and writing development."
Enter Success by Six, the United Way of Southwest Oklahoma's coalition to increase school readiness and ensure every child has the tools they need to enter kindergarten ready to succeed. One of the ways we are working towards this goal is instilling a lifelong love of reading in the hearts of children by providing books to those who need them. And with your help, we can make this goal a reality! We are collecting books for children aged birth to 6 for the entire month of October. These books will then be distributed to doctor's offices, health clinics, elementary schools and to the community at large at book swaps. We hope to collect 250 books...will you help us?
Books may be dropped off Monday - Friday, from 8:00A - 5:00P, at the United Way office (1116 SW "A" Ave, Lawton OK 73501) all month long.
